Attraction of Nesidiocoris tenuis to Different LED Wavelengths: Evaluation Under Light-Interference-Free Conditions

Abstract

We measured the attraction of Nesidiocoris tenuis (Hemiptera: Miridae) to LED lights of various wavelengths without interference from other light sources (“darkroom test”), unlike previous studies. We also investigated the effect of lights of different wattage on N. tenuis attraction. In the darkroom test, the attraction of N. tenuis was significantly higher at 365 and 385 nm wavelengths. However, there was no significant difference in attraction due to lighting of different wattage. Thus, 3-W LED lights would be sufficient for attracting this predator in spaces of similar size to our experimental area (20.8 m3). Furthermore, we tested the attractiveness of 9-W LED lights to N. tenuis in greenhouses (379.8 m3); however, there was no significant difference among the wavelengths tested. This study provides fundamental information on LED wavelength and light intensity conditions for enhancing the establishment of released natural enemies.
