Occurrence of Insect Pest and Detection Characteristics of Different Survey Methods in an Ex Situ Conservation Site of Korea Fir

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence of potential insect pests to support the conservation of an ex situ plantation of Korean fir (Abies koreana E.H.Wilson). Field observation, cone inspections and multiple trapping methods, including Malaise traps, pheromone traps, and blacklight traps, were employed over a three-year period in an ex situ conservation site established in Jeju Island to investigate insect pest collection characteristics according to trapping methods. A total of 38 pest species were identified, comprising 26 coleopterans, 8 hemipterans, and 4 lepidopterans. Scarab beetles showed the highest cumulative abundance, and Bifurcanomala aulax was the most frequently observed species, accounting for 35.7% of the total individuals. Significant differences in species collection were detected among trapping methods. The Malaise trap recorded the highest species richness with 19 species. In contrast, the pheromone trap captured 742 individuals of Bifurcanomala aulax out of 806 total individuals, showing strong species-specific attraction. Cone inspection revealed only larvae of Dioryctria abietella. These results demonstrate that the combined use of different trap types is necessary for effective pest monitoring in ex situ conservation sites and suggest that additional long-term monitoring is required to accurately characterize pest communities. The findings of this study provide fundamental information for establishing pest monitoring and management strategies in ex situ conservation plantations of Korean fir.
