Identification and Field Bioassays of the Sex Pheromone of Syllepte pallidinotalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
Abstract
We studied the sex pheromone system of Syllepte pallidinotalis (Hampson) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a grape pest found in Korea and Japan. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of female pheromone gland extracts identified three components: (10E,12Z)-hexadeca-10,12-dienal (E10,Z12-16:Ald), (11E)-hexadeca-11-enal (E11-16:Ald), and (10E,12E)-hexadeca-10, 12-dienal (E10,E12-16:Ald), at a ratio of 100:5:4. Field trapping tests with various blends of synthetic compounds showed that the major compound, E10,Z12-16:Ald, alone did not attract male S. pallidinotalis. E10,Z12-16:Ald and E11-16:Ald were essential for attraction, and male catches were similar across a wide range of ratios of these two compounds. The addition of another glandular component, E10,E12-16:Ald, did not affect male capture in the primary binary blend. Therefore, a synthetic mixture of E10,Z12-16:Ald and E11- 16:Ald at a natural ratio (100:5) represents an effective tool for the monitoring and control of S. pallidinotalis.
