Abstract

This study investigated host associations and potential for biological control of tachinid flies parasitizing the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea, whose number of generations has increased in response to rising temperatures in South Korea. From April to June 2024, a total of 1,000 H. cunea larvae were collected from Seoul, Sejong, Jeolla-do, and Chungcheongnam-do and reared under laboratory conditions. Among these, 391 larvae died from pathogenic infections, while 253 successfully emerged as adults. Evidence of tachinid oviposition was observed in 116 host individuals, of which 70 adult tachinids successfully emerged. The emerged individuals were identified as belonging to three genera and three species, including Exorista japonica and Compsilura concinnata. Among them, E. japonica was recorded from all surveyed regions and exhibited the highest occurrence frequency. Dissection of parasitized individuals that died from viral or fungal infections revealed that the identified tachinid species appeared to have limited resistance to host-borne pathogens. These results indicate that E. japonica shows the highest frequency and the widest distribution among tachinid species parasitizing H. cunea in South Korea, suggesting that it could serve as a promising candidate for the biological control agent of H. cunea.
