Newly Recorded Weevil Species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to Korean Fauna

Abstract


Curculionidae includes more than 600 species within approximately 250 genera from Korean fauna. In the present study, 13 species of the Curculionidae are newly recognized from South Korea based on morphological study as followed: Dendrobaris flavosignata (Roelofs, 1879); Dendrobaris insularis (Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985); Mononychus amurensis Schultze, 1898 (resurrected); Neomecopus subarmatus Hustache, 1921; Coprodema calandraeformis Wollaston, 1873; Cossonus (Caenocossonus) tibialis Folwaczny, 1964; Xenomimetes tenuis Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985; Dorytomus taeniatus (Fabricius, 1781); Styanax kuwanoi Chujo & Voss, 1960; Acicnemis maculaalba Roelofs, 1875; Karekizo impressicollis Morimoto, 1962; Trachodes simulator Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1995; Rhadinomerus jejuensis Park et Hong sp. nov..



한국에 새롭게 기록되는 바구미류(딱정벌레목: 바구미과)에 대한 보고

초록


한국의 바구미과에 속하는 종들은 약 250여속에 600여종이 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 1신종, 12 미기록종 (Dendrobaris flavosignata (Roelofs, 1879); Dendrobaris insularis (Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985); Mononychus amurensis Schultze, 1898 (resurrected); Neomecopus subarmatus Hustache, 1921; Coprodema calandraeformis Wollaston, 1873; Cossonus (Caenocossonus) tibialis Folwaczny, 1964; Xenomimetes tenuis Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985; Dorytomus taeniatus (Fabricius, 1781); Styanax kuwanoi Chujo & Voss, 1960; Acicnemis maculaalba Roelofs, 1875; Karekizo impressicollis Morimoto, 1962; Trachodes simulator Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1995; Rhadinomerus jejuensis Park et Hong sp. nov.)에 대한 한국 분포를 확인하고 보고하고자 한다.



    The family Curculionidae had been recorded more than 600 of species in Korean peninsula up to now. Many kinds of weevil species are collected well with the funnel trap using the attractants like ethanol, α-pinene or insect pheromone. In the present study, 13 species of the Curculionidae are newly recognized from South Korea based on morphological study: Dendrobaris flavosignata (Roelofs, 1879); Dendrobaris insularis (Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985); Mononychus amurensisSchultze, 1898 (resurrected); Neomecopus subarmatusHustache, 1921;Coprodema calandraeformisWollaston, 1873;Cossonus (Caenocossonus) tibialisFolwaczny, 1964;Xenomimetes tenuis Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985; Dorytomus taeniatus (Fabricius, 1781); Styanax kuwanoi Chujo & Voss, 1960; Acicnemis maculaalbaRoelofs, 1875;Karekizo impressicollisMorimoto, 1962;Trachodes simulator Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1995; and one new species, Rhadinomerus jejuensis Park et Hong sp. nov., is described.

    Materials and Methods

    The collected materials were deposited in the collection of Research Institute of Forest Insect Diversity (RIFID, Namyangju, Korea), Honam National Institute of Biological Resources (HNIBR, Mokpo, Korea), Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources (NNIBR, Sangju, Korea). National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR, Incheon, Korea). The external morphological characters were examined using a microscope (S8Apo, Leica, Heerbrugg, Switzerland). The photographs of adults were taken with Canon 5D Mark IV camera and Canon MP-E 65mm (Canon, Tokyo, Japan). Multiple images were stacked using Helicon Focus version 8.2.0.

    The abbreviations of the collected site are as follows: GW: Gangwon Province, GG: Gyeonggi province CB: Chungcheongbuk province, CN: Chungcheongnam province, JB: Jeonlabuk province, JN: Jeonlanam province, GB: Gyeongsangbuk province, GN: Gyeongsangnam province, JJ: Jeju province.

    Diagnosis. Body length 4.3-4.8mm (excl. rostrum). Body black except reddish black legs and antennae, elongated oval and slightly flattened. Two pairs of yellowish scale patches located on basal area and middle of third interval. Head round and regularly but shallowly punctate. Compound eyes located latero-ventrally. Rostrum parallel-sided, as long as pronotum and similar width with interocular width. Basal area of rostrum horizontally sulcate. Antennal scape inserted laterally at anterior one third. Pronotum and elytra with scale pubescence patches. Rostrum slightly longer than fore femur and narrower than interocular width. Pronotum 1.2 times wider than long with distinct apical short constriction. Elytra 1.5 times longer than wide and sparsely dotted with yellow scales. Elytral striae located in distinct longitudinal groove. Fifth interval of elytra with a blunt projection near apical margin.

    Dendrobaris insularis (Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985) 노랑비늘무늬애바구미(신칭)(Fig. 1-2)

    Diagnosis. Body 3.3-3.7mm (excl. rostrum). Body castaneous or dark reddish brown, with scattered yellowish oval scales. Pronotum with a vague scaly stripe on each side. Elytra with two pairs of scaly spots, anterior one combined with three rows of overlapped scales at base of third interval and one rows of scales at base of fourth interval and posterior spot at 1/3 from apex on second and third intervals formed with a row on second interval and two or three rows on third interval. First and second ventrites densely scaled at sides excepting antero-lateral corners. Compound eyes almost round and located latero-ventrally. Rostrum arched, parallel-sided, as long as pronotum and similar width with interocular width. Basal area of rostrum horizontally sulcate. Antennal scape inserted laterally at anterior one fourth. Pronotum 1.1 times wider than long with weak constriction. Elytral striae narrowed and located in distinct longitudinal groove. Interstices of elytra 4 times as wide as striae.

    Diagnosis. Body length 4.3-4.9 mm, oval. Body blackish brown covered with yellowish brown short decumbent scales. Rostrum as long as pronotum and as wide as interocular width. Vertex between eye slightly concave. Pronotum 1.3 times wider than long, widest at near base and furrowed longitudinally at middle with whitish scales on the furrow. Posterior margin acute at middle. Scutellum narrow and barely exposed. Elytra with punctual strioles on clear furrow. Elytral intervals flattened. Odd numbers of interval covered with yellowish narrow scales and even numbers of intervals covered with brownish narrow scales. Second interval connected with 10th interval and 3rd interval connected with 9th interval.

    Distribution. Korea (GG-new record), Russia (Far East).

    Remarks. This species was regarded as a junior synonym of Mononychus vittatusFaldermann, 1835, however, these species can be distinguished by the elytral color pattern and the shape of the apical fringe of the tibiae. M. vittatus has whitish scales on odd number of intervals and golden scales on even number of intervals. The fringe of teeth on the fore tibia reaches the middle of the tibia in M. vittatus, whereas in M. amurensis it extends only to the anterior two-fifths of the tibia.

    Diagnosis. Body length 5.5-6.5 mm (excl. rostrum). Body elongated oval, black except antennae and tarsi. Head round with long rostrum, rostrum slightly longer than fore-femur. Eyes located on dorsal area and composing round circle. Vertex between eye slightly separated toward anterior margin of pronotum. Antennae incerted on lateral part of rostrum, scape slightly shorter than the remains combined, funicles with 6 segments and club with 4 segments. First segment of club 4 times longer than wide and 2 times longer than the remains combined. Linear frons somewhat widened at upper area between eyes. Pronotum wider than long with round lateral margin. Scutellum long with brown thick scale-like hairs at base and white scalelike hair at posterior part. Elytra tessellate with white, brown and black short hairs. Whitish scale-like hairs covered at base of first interval. Legs long, femora with a point denticle on inner margin. Third tarsal segments bilobed.

    Diagnosis. Body length 3.0 mm (excl. rostrum). Body blackish brown except reddish brown antennae and tarsi. Antennae 11 segmented. Rostrum 2.5 times longer than wide and as wide as width between eyes. Antennal scrobe inserted at middle of rostrum. Head irregularly punctured but anterior half of rostrum minutely punctate and then covered with bigger and irregular punctures. Pronotum with somewhat round side and widest at near area of basal angle. Lateral margin gradually narrowing anteriorly and anterior margin with narrowing constriction. Elytra 1.9 times longer than wide, somewhat broader than prontoum. Elytral strioles clear and big punctation. Elytral decilvity clearly narrowing and abruptly truncate at posterior margin.

    Diagnosis. Body length about 5.0 mm in length excluding rostrum. Body black. Antennae and tarsi reddish brown. Body flat and cylindrical. Head and rostrum covered with punctures. Vertex somewhat glabrous. Interocular area with a small but clear groove. Antennae inserted in apical third area, scape as long as 2nd to 8th antennomeres taken together. Prothorax slightly longer than wide, widest at just behind the middle, and roundly narrowing anteriorly and posteriorly; Dorsum with many punctures and a longitudinally impunctate area. The punctures on the groove bigger than others. Scutellum round, shiny and flat. Elytra elongate, subparallel, and two times as long as wide. Striae big and clear. Legs thick and club shaped.

    Diagnosis. Body length 2.2-2.6 mm (excl. rostrum). Body dark reddish brown to black, tarsi reddish brown, apical margin of pronotum, apices of tibiae and humeral calli of elytra diluted with reddish brown, shiny. Head with small sparse punctures on vertex. Rostrum narrowing from base to middle, then parallel-sided. Antennae with scape longer than funicle. Prothorax a little longer than broad, widest before the base. Punctures on pronotum elongate. Eyltral striae cleary punctate. Intervals from the base to declivity each with a row of small punctures, 9th inteval tickened at beginning of declivity and lateral margin of declivity slightly expanded.

    Diagnosis. Body length 5.1 mm (excl. rostrum). Body reddish black except reddish brown apical area of tibiae, tarsi and antennae. Head round and closely covered with distinct punctures on vertex. Rostrum two times longer than pronotum, slightly wider than interocular width. Antennae inserted laterally at one fifth of anterior part of rostrum. Pronotum 1.4 times wider than long, clearly punctured, widest at anterior one third and gradually narrowing posteriorly. Dorsal area of pronotum clearly punctate with decumbent golden hairs. Elytra weakly tessellate with reddish brown color and covered with short brownish and golden hairs. Elytral striae clear and interstices slightly wider than diameter of striole. Inner margin of all tibiae with distinct projection.

    Diagnosis. Body length 7.7-11.8 mm (excl. rostrum), black. Body elongated and thick. Body covered with slightly decumbent short hairs. Rostrum slightly wider than long and somewhat flattened. Antennae with short scrobe and narrow club. Pronotum as long as wide and covered with distinctly round tubercles. Elytra subparallel sided, 1.8 times longer than wide and clearly narrowing at beginning of declivity. Each interval with irregular tubercles, base area of 3rd interval with longitudinal bump and 5th interval of declivity with a big tubercle. Apical area of elytra with a pair of tubercles. Legs with distinct puntures.

    Diagnosis. Body Length 3.5-5.3 mm (excl. rostrum). Body blackish brown except reddish brown antennae and tarsi covered with whitish, brownish and blackish round scales and same colored sub-erected scale-like setae. Rostrum slender, 1.5 times longer than pronotum and cover with scale from base to antennal insertion. Antennal scrobe located at basal one third. Pronotum 1.2 times wider than long and covered with whitish and brown scales. Dorsum of pronotum sparsely covered with erect thick and short hairs. Elytra mainly covered with brown scales except blackish scales from basal margin to middle. Each side of blackish mark beside scutellum covered with whitish scales and a big postmedian whitish patch. Relatively small blackish patch located after postmedian whitish patch. Elytral striae clearly punctured but concealed by scales. All interstices with a low of erect scale hairs. Femora with a pair of distinct carinated projection on inner margin of stalk and fore tibiae weakly flattened and dilated internally at middle.

    Diagnosis. Body length 3.7 mm (excl. rostrum). Body blackish brown except reddish brown antennae and tarsi covered with ochroleucous, greyish and blackish round scales and long sub-erected scalelike setae. Rostrum slender, 1.5 times longer than pronotum and cover with scale and erect hair bunches from base to antennal insertion. Pronotum 1.1 times wider than long and mainly covered with ochroleucous scales except blackish brown triangle area at base. Lateral margin almost parallel-sided at basal half and gently narrowing anteriorly. Dorsum of pronotum with a pair of dark grey scalelike hair bunch at middle and several long scalelike hairs near anterior margin. Elytra 1.5 times longer than broad, parallel-sided from behind humeri to apical one-third. Dorsal suface of pronotum with a big white and dark grey scale ring pattern and a pair of ochroleucous patch at basal one third. Blackish brown erect scalelike hairs scattered at basal half of elytra and elytral declivity.

    Diagnosis. Body length 3.9-4.3 mm (excl. rostrum). Body elongated oval blackish brown except reddish brown antennae and tarsi covered with whitish, brownish and blackish round scales brownish and blackish erected scalelike setae. Rostrum slightly longer than pronotum and covered with scale and setae at basal one third. Apical area of rostrum bald and glabrous. Pronotum as long as wide and covered with whitish scale at each side and blackish scale longitudinally at middle. Ochroleucous suberect long scales on anterior margin and lateral margin of pronotum. Blackish suberect long scales scattered along median blackish scale patch. Elytra gradually widen from humeral angle to the middle and gently arched toward posterior margin. Elytra mainly covered with blackish scales but humeral angle and each side of declivity covered with brown scale. Horizontal whitish scale band arched at apical one third. Fore femora with a pair of distinct carinated projection on inner margin of stalk but mid and hind femoral projection very weak and almost invisible.

    Description. Body oblong oval, body length 4.1-5.9 mm (excl. rostrum), and blackish-brown except dark brown legs and reddish-brown antennae. Derm covered with short decumbent yellow setae. Rostrum relatively slender, elongate cylindrical, approximately as long as pronotum, gently arched and slightly narrowed toward apex. Antennae inserted slightly before middle of rostrum on lateral sides in male, and at middle in female. Antennal scrobes originated on lateral sides, broaden toward ventral base of rostrum, and scrobes on both sides met at base of rostrum, separated by a weak median elevation. Antennae moderate, scape slightly shorter than pedicel. First segment of pedicel robust, slightly longer than wide, 2nd segment rather slender, clavate, 1.5 times longer than wide, 3rd to 7th segments as long as wide. Club pointed oval, densly covered with short hairs. Head loosely covered with dull punctures, eyes rounded, with upper portion broadly rounded and lower portion slightly tapering to a point. Pronotum 1.1-1.2 times wider than long, widest at middle, weakly narrowing posteriorly and roundly narrowing anteriorly. Dorsum of pronotum roughly punctate with smooth reticulation, posterior part in puncture shallow and anterior part in puncture. Anterior constriction of pronotum weak but distinctly wide on dorsal area. Elytra distinctly wider than pronotum, 1.4 times longer than wide, widest at basal area and gradually narrowing apically. Humeral angles distinctly angulate, rounded and slightly elevated. Each side of elytra clearly constricted at just before apical margin. Elytra tesseallated with tiny but elongate golden decumbent setae, clearly punctured with quadrate strioles, striae slightly narrower than interstices. Intervals of elytra regularly but sparsely covered with one line of sub-erect short hairs. Each femur very weakly clubate and inner margin of femur concave at apical one third. Hind femur with a distinct and blunt projection on basal one third inner margin in male, without in female. All femora with a small tubercle before on inner margin at about the apical two-thirds, at beginning of apical emargination. Tibiae rather long, protibiae nearly straight but slightly curved outward, whereas meso- and metatibiae slightly curved inward. Tarsi somewhat slender, 1st tarsomere slightly widened, 2 times as long as wide, 2nd and 3rd tarsomeres as long as wide, 3rd tarsomere deeply bilobed. 4th tarsomere invisible and 5th tarsomere 2 times as long as 3rd tarsomere. On ventral surface of thorax, rostral canal distinctly developed to middle of metasternum. Metasternum and 1st ventrite slightly concave in male, weakly convex in female. First, 2nd and 5th ventrite roughly punctate but punctations of 3rd and 4th ventrites almost invisible. Aedeagus in male genitalia smoothly and gradually narrowed anteriorly, with apex slightly pointed.

    Remarks. This species is easily distinguished from other Rhadinomerus species by a distinct and blunt projection on the inner margin of hind femur.

    Etymology. The species is named after Jeju Island, where it was discovered.
