Assessment of Pesticide Use Patterns and Insecticide Rotation by Cultivation Type in Jeju Citrus Orchards
Abstract
This study evaluated pesticide application patterns and the degree of insecticide rotation across 33 citrus orchards in Jeju over a 3-year period (2020–2022). By analyzing actual insecticide usage records, the implementation of Mode of Action (MoA)-based rotation was quantitatively assessed. A Pesticide Rotation Implementation Index (PRII) model was developed by incorporating a penalty system for continuous application and redundant tank mixing of insecticides within an identical MoA group. The overall average PRII for Jeju citrus orchards was determined to be 50.56. Open-field cultivation (56.9 ± 18.83) showed higher compliance with rotation principles compared to greenhouse cultivation, including heated (48.9 ± 24.17) and non-heated (47.6 ± 13.51) systems. This indicates that adhering to rotation principles is more challenging in greenhouse settings where higher spraying frequencies are common. Frequent occurrences of consecutive MoA use and redundant mixing have been observed in greenhouse orchards, revealing a heightened risk of pest resistance development. These findings highlight the urgent need to establish a precise pest management system centered on the MoA classification instead of on commercial brand names. Furthermore, the results show the necessity of providing customized resistance management education, specifically tailored to greenhouse farmers, to effectively mitigate insecticide resistance development.
